The Animal Inclusion Project

The Animal Inclusion Project, launched in 2022 as a pilot initiative, aimed initially to integrate animals more fully into society. Its primary focus was on the transitional housing program, offering users with pets, experiencing homelessness, an opportunity to access housing without exclusion based on pet ownership—a common challenge in homelessness programs. While the project has now expanded its scope to include various aspects of the organization, such as the day center and overdose prevention program, the committee's direction has evolved in new and dynamic ways.

After extensive research and collaboration with organizations and partners dedicated to animal welfare, we were introduced to the concept of Animal-Assisted Therapy in social intervention. This innovative practice, relatively unfamiliar in the Montreal area, became a catalyst for reshaping the foundations of the Animal Inclusion project. Subsequently, a pilot committee was established to formulate best practices for promoting animal inclusivity, considering their needs, across all of the organization's services. The committee is comprised of:

  • Caroline Leblanc - T.S, M.Serv.soc. - F.A.C.E Research Project: Candidate for a PhD in Community Health - Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences - Université de Sherbrooke

  • Jamie Saad - Community Project Manager - SPCA

  • Animal Law Committee at the University of Sherbrooke

  • PACS Project - Social Service Technical students at Dawson College

  • The center accepts visitors' animals at all times. We are happy to contribute to the well-being of visitors and their furry companions.

  • It all starts with an idea. Perhaps you're envisioning launching a business, transforming a hobby into something more, or unveiling a creative project to share with the world. Regardless of your endeavor, the manner in which you narrate your story online can be the key differentiator.

  • In collaboration with the City of Montreal, through the Mittens program, sterilization and microchipping services are offered at a reduced cost.

  • We are currently looking for a veterinarian who will be able to provide emergency services for furry animals at a low cost.

A pilot project called "Animal Inclusion" is being developed to include animal-assisted therapy in our social intervention services, in collaboration with various sectors. More information will be provided in the future.
