Welcome to our Home

The Benedict Labre House was established in 1952 by Mr. Tony Walsh as a day center for the homeless.  The House originally served the residents of Griffintown which was a predominantly Irish, working-class neighborhood. Today, the Benedict Labre House serves a more diverse population made up of men and women from all different walks of life.

The staff and volunteers are committed to providing the guests of the House with essential services such as hot meals, emergency food bags, clothing, showers, as well as providing a variety of individualized services and programs, all which are available at no cost to its guests. The House has always been deeply rooted in the community and as a result relies heavily on volunteers to provide many of the essential services, either through donations or by lending a helping hand. We currently have in excess of 500 volunteers providing over 10,000 hours of their valuable time to the House.  The Benedict Labre House is a home for the homeless, a refuge for those in need.

Tony "Nine Toes" Johnson

Dear friends,

It is with much sadness and a very heavy heart that I write this message. Our beloved “Tony”, Anthony Johnson, passed away on September 5th 2012 at the LaSalle General Hospital. He entered the hospital a month earlier after breaking his hip, and there were several complications that followed. As many of you may have known, Tony, while he has always kept a strong smile, had been dealing with health problems throughout the last few years.

This came as quite a shock to us, and I assume it will come as a shock to many of you. To be honest, I am at a loss for words, except to say that I will miss him, his smile, and all his well-timed witty comments dearly. Having worked with him for over 8 years, he had become a “staple” in my day and his loss will be felt. Tony was a huge part of our House and an important member of our Benedict Labre family. We know that he touched the lives of many of you, whether it be through a weekend meal service or throughout the week, he was in many ways the face of the House to volunteers, guests and really anyone who walked in. He will be greatly missed.

We will work with his family to organize a memorial service in the coming days. I will send further details as soon as I can.

Please feel free to forward this news to others.
